iCLAT Essentials - "WHAT is an iCLAT? WHEN does it work best? HOW does it work? WHY now?

An iCLAT is designed for one important purpose and one purpose only, that is, to generate a large IMMEDIATE charitable income tax deduction for future annual gifts to charity.  An iCLAT is simply another name for what is technically known as a "reversionary" charitable lead annuity trust.  While it is a well established charitable planning tool that has been around for 40+ years, iCLATs are still relatively unknown in the charitable planning world, and much less in the financial planning sector.  iCLAT's are NOT to be confused with their much more complicated cousins, the traditional wealth transfer CLTs, and "shark fin" or "balloon" CLTs, which are primarily designed for estate tax purposes.  Remember, the sole purpose of an iCLAT is to provide for IMMEDIATE income tax savings for future annual gifts, they have nothing to do with saving estate taxes or estate planning.  For that reason, then are much simpler to explain, establish and administer compared to all other types of CLTs.   The current income tax and estate tax environment (i.e. the recently doubled standard deduction, the suspension of the overall limitation on large itemized deductions, and the  $11,580,000 per person estate tax exemption amount) coupled with the continuing historically low IRS 7520 rate, make iCLATs a powerful charitable planning tool for two large groups of clients/donors to consider and establish.
